Thank you for reading my poetry!
This poem is an exception to the list of unpublished ones since along with its translation into Spanish, it was included in my poetic anthology “CANCIONES DIFÍCILES DE CANTAR – Poemas Explicados”.
Written in the spring of 2019, these verses were inspired by a heartbreaking situation that a coworker experienced. Reflecting on her tragedy, I realized that understanding and accepting that our loved ones may leave this world before us is difficult for most, perhaps because by believing the opposite is the “natural order” we try to avoid the enormous sadness that it causes us just to imagine the possibility. But when it happens, the pain and sorrow are surely exponential and when the one who leaves is just a child, the defeat is far from the imagination and understanding of those who have not experienced it.
¿WHY LORD?
My little angel has been called,
to the kingdom of the Lord,
peacefully looking closed her eyes,
while still cradled in my arms,
I did not know how to react,
seeing her rise into the sky,
and cried for mercy, none I got,
just pain and sorrow, and an empty heart.
Not like before my faith’s been tested,
fear that this time may not survive,
my whys will never get an answer,
see no more purpose in this life,
except to think of her with love,
in every spring and every fall,
and sure, miss her lovely smile,
on summer days and winter nights.
